SOCIAL INCLUSION &
GENDER EQUALITY
Social inequalities and climate change are closely linked topics. The impact of climate change varies significantly across the globe which is why it is crucial to find solutions beneficial for all communities. It is known that deterioration caused by climate change has a disproportionate impact on populations with existing vulnerabilities. Their susceptibility to climate crises is rooted in one or more of certain characteristics: socio-economic status, gender, ethnicity, location, financial insecurity and lack of education, basic services and justice.
Our solutions should attempt to answer the fundamental question: How can climate action be inclusive?
When decision-makers propose poorly designed climate change reducing strategies they can exacerbate the financial and societal pressure on these disadvantaged communities.
Firstly when governments develop adaptation measures they must thoroughly examine the potentially affected communities. With the knowledge of local characteristics, we can make mindful assessments without causing harm to the social groups. Governments must also analyse the long-term responses and effects of these changes as these can vary across generations.
Often there is a sense of scepticism towards new policies targeting climate change. However, this seems to be often the result of a lack of transparency and citizen engagement. Individuals should participate in the process because they possess the most accurate knowledge about a given region. Local solutions should be the goal in creating socially inclusive resolutions to climate change.
