Terroir from Space help winemakers mitigate the impacts of climate change by identifying suitable unexploited planting sites for vineyards.
Climate change is quickly altering the way we make wine. It directly impacts environmental and climatic parameters which are key to vine growing and winemaking The changes in temperature, hydrometry or extreme weather events (hail, snow, drought) are a highly impacting factor for quality-driven winemakers. It presents both challenges and opportunities which can be carefully evaluated with the help of data.
Viticulture, or simply wine growing, calls for a farsighted data-driven adaptation strategy that would smartly detect optimal planting sites. Terroir in Space utilizes a combination of Earth Observation Data, artificial intelligence and climatic forecast models to identify unexploited sites optimal for vineyards. The model infers suitable vine varieties in accordance with local regulations for high-quality production. The site selection process will also have the flexibility to take into account initial customer inputs or constraints.
Through conscious site selection for wine growing, the project will be able to promote sustainable agronomic practices while restoring the site’s natural biodiversity. In the future, this method could be even scaled into other crops such as olives, cocoa, tobacco, fruit, etc.
